Shits gotta change around here

Now, Im not there yet. But Im close to that point. First the Debates on NSFW content, Then on feminism. Now People are getting banned, good people, people who make this place great. Everybody is pissing off each other, And people are leaving. This place is worthless without The Opponauts. The minute the mass exodus of Authors starts, this place goes down the crapper. I'm willing to stick it out with the assumption that things will get better in the near future, but we gotta stop driving people away. Im not even sure Clay would want to come back after his ban is lifted. This has gotta stop, In an effort to be inclusive to new members (which IMO is a noble effort), we have excluded those already here. And thats not okay. There has gotta be a way to be inclusive while not having these consequences. I love being here and talking cars with you all, I especially love sharing my art with you and getting Ideas for it from here. But Im at my wits end, I dont wanna be here unless everybody is here with me. If everybody is leaving, I see no point in staying

This is what happens when an internet community consumes too much of your life. Sorry, but it's true. I GTFO Jeep Forum a few years back because I got too caught up in it. I've always had a good social life and consider myself an extrovert but when you get a billion people whose lives revolve around a forum type deal together shit tends to go wrong. We've all got enough bullshit to deal with in REAL life. Start adding made up stress that manifests itself from internet use and you've got real issues.

Welcome to the internet? I mean come on. People are this sensitive about text on their computer screen? Go to any forum where there is open comments and public posting and you will see topics and comments that will upset you.

Has the age of blocking everything you don't want to see or hear, including watching news channels that only cater directly to your political opinions really ruined the internet this much?

There was a time when you could discuss anything and you wouldn't have this much crying about spilled milk. There was a time online when you could see an offensive comment and not go into insane rage. There was a time when you could discuss things rationally without getting upset. There was a time when you could see differing opinions and not start hating people over them. I guess this time is over?

I used to post on political forums, skeptic forums, and video game forums where things get to FAR MORE insane levels then you can ever conceive it reaching here. You did not see post after post of people raging out. These were unmoderated forums as well.

Every topic here has a clear preview and you know what it's going to be about. You can easily avoid anything. The only thing that is questionable is NSFW content where the title say not safe for work. However if you are viewing blogs where EVERYONE can post ANYTHING at work and your have a job where NSFW stuff matters then that is a huge mistake.

People like sites like this because you can have discussions. There are game and political sites that exist solely because you can discuss things. When people start to like a site they will start to post other things and want to be there, that's just how it is. This is why actual forums are better, because you have more clear topic sections, but because forums are dead and blogs took over that's just the way it is.

There is not a single thing anyone can say here that would piss me off ever. The only thing that can piss me off is if official paid journalists on the main Jalopnik site were getting out of hand with shit, which isn't the case. I don't understand how this is some sort of a zen like state is impossible to achieve for people here. Just accept it and move on.

I'll leave it at this, because I've been hounded all day for it by one of said people. Clay got banned because he got a bit pissed at people who were calling his names, insulting his livelihood, and then went on babbling tirades against him. He had already been warned a few times by the mods(or mod) for the same reasons.

It takes a whole lot to piss me off, in fact nothing discussed in the past few days has. Its just sad to see people go over this. If people like CrazedClay, Yamahog or Logansteno arent here to make Oppo great, then I dont think its worth it for me to be here either. My opinion of Oppo is we stand by our own, I dont see that happening here.

I really hope you are going to stay, but if you want to take a short leave of absence, the just do it. You don't need to post that you are thinking about it, and then go and make a post about you leaving. All that does is mean everyone starts posting, "I might leave oppo guys" and then it just causes more shit. If you want to take a break just do it quietly, and don't post about it. All that does is exacerbate the problem and keep it on the forefront of the feed. I really hope you and all the others stay because you all contribute great stuff, but if you don't want to stay or want to take a break, just do it quietly and let oppo heal its wounds

I've seen you receive a lot of support from the posters here this past week with everything you had going on. It would be a shame to let a very small minority dictate your fate here. Yes things got out of hand on the one post that I saw (where there more?) but that doesn't mean the whole community is bad and the site is now a "dumpster fire" Nothing and no one is perfect. I wish you nothing but the best in your current and future situations.

Are they leaving under their own volition or because of banning? From what i've seen it looks like both. Banning IMO is unacceptable unless something really strange is happening.

I use this site a lot, at my job there is literally nothing to do all day so I have this on refresh and read everything. Nothing I saw really was anything that crazy to cause anyone in my opinion to leave. I understand not wanting this site to become some sewer like some subreddits and forums are but people choosing to leave over disagreements when they can still be here and make posts and avoid topics that they know will upset them is an easy fix. This isn't facebook where you just have your friends here, those people need to accept that.

I've been hounded all day by the person that started all of it, because I may have subliminally called him out through passive aggressive messages. From insulting him to telling him his first born child would be worthless, he said it all. Except anything helpful. They banned the wrong person, and that's all I have to say. I saw the convo, Clay was as much at fault as the person t-boned by a drunk driver. Think Anger Management levels of trolling were committed.

The uncomfortable truth of Oppo is that it's only ever been an inclusive place for men. It's being faced with a choice right now:
1. It can stay the same as it's always been and be incredibly inclusive toward men and pretty hostile toward women.

2. It can become actually inclusive which will involve growing pains, arguments and the loss of people who don't actually want it be inclusive, they want it to be an old boy's club.

This is a challenge organizations of all kind have been facing for the last 100 years, some have made the switch, some have not, some are just getting there.

I've been pretty vocal in my opinions, and I know I've contributed to the drama as a result. But I've done that because Oppo is and can be great, and it's worth fighting for, but I too am getting tired. I can only have so many arguments with 16 year olds who have no knowledge of the real world but have very strong views about everything. I can only let so many sexist jokes and comments slide. I don't like coming to Oppo happy and leaving angry, frustrated and disheartened.

I'm torn right now, I really am. Do I shut up and turn a blind eye to what I find to be reprehensible or do I challenge people at the risk of causing drama? Or do I just leave, and if I do where do I go? I've never found a car community so accepting of all brands and cars, I just wish it were as accepting of all people.

If I ever see any really political or taboo posts on oppo, I tend to just skip over them. I don't come here to partake in stupid internet debates, or to shit on other people's opinions (even if I actually am offended at times).
